As part of his work at Columbia University’s Visual Media Center, James collaborated with archaeologists and art historians on field missions that gathered digital images for teaching and research. He adopted new technologies to document cultural heritage sites in the Middle East and Africa and contributed his own collection of images from Mali and Yemen to ARTstor. James also recorded the life of his own community—Astoria, Queens—and nutured a deep appreciation of photography as both an art form and a means of engaging and embracing people of different cultures. Here is a sampling of his Flickr albums.
